Gothic arch tracing has been acknowledged as one of the most reliable means of recording
centric relation.
1
The procedure can be used as a standard protocol for determination of centric relation
or for purposes of education and research. Extraoral gothic arch tracing has been
recommended over intraoral gothic arch tracing.
2
The recordings are generally made using materials such as precipitated chalk in denatured
alcohol,
2
aerosol marking sprays
3
(Occlude; Pascal Intl, Bellevue, Wash), thin wax films,
4
or crayons.
5
These materials require removal and reapplication with every erroneous recording.
Some are also prone to being smudged or rubbed off due to contact with saliva or the
operator's fingers. To overcome these problems, this article describes the use of
a magic slate, a device designed to be temporarily scribed. To read this article in full you will need to make a payment
