Making impressions of 2-piece implants is typically associated with the repeated disassembly and reassembly of superstructures and related to soft-tissue trauma. Intraoral scanning of 1-piece zirconia implants is problematic because scan bodies are not readily available. Whether using virtual hybrid casts generated by merging intraoral scan data with the known surface geometry of abutments can solve these difficulties is not clear because data on accuracy of the workflow are sparse.

In computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) dentistry, the CAD of the prosthesis represents the clinical prerequisite design to restore the treated tooth. However, how closely the CAM prosthesis shape matches the CAD, particularly in relation to different materials, is unclear.

The accuracy of intraoral scanners is a prerequisite for the fabrication of dental restorations in computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) dentistry. While the precision of intraoral scanners has been investigated in vitro, clinical data on the accuracy of intraoral scanning (IOS) are limited.

Most of the available digital systems are designed to image teeth and soft tissue rather than dental implants. However, although some are marketed specifically to record implant position, whether these products are better for implant scanning is unclear.

The quality of the digital cast obtained from an intraoral scanner is an important comparison parameter for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) restorations. However, data on cast quality are typically provided by manufacturers, and objective evaluation of these devices is lacking.

With the emergence of virtual articulators, virtual facebow techniques have been developed for mounting maxillary digital scans to virtual articulators. Different scanning methods can be used to obtain 3D face scans, but the influence that these methods have on the accuracy with which a maxillary digital scan is transferred to a 3D face scan is unknown.

Laser sintering devices have been increasingly used to fabricate the metal frameworks of metal–ceramic restorations. In the fabrication process, the sintering layer thickness is an important parameter; however, information on how it may affect the flexural strength of metal frameworks remains limited.
